Figure 112. Who held NYC taxi medallion loans, and where they moved, 2000 to 2025

Fixed nodes = lender families. Node area = medallions held at year end. Arrow width = medallions moved; in Memory (the default) recent moves are bold and older ones fade.

Time

Smooth: moves appear in the month they were filed; widths are the last 12 months. Self-loops and Markov shares stay calendar-year. Lapse exits appear at their mechanical 5-year lapse date, not when the loan was repaid.

Layout

Flow (default): lenders that trade heavily sit close together, so big moves are short arrows; position shows trading relationships, not lender type (node colour shows type). Hub: Public in the centre, lenders in arcs by type, ordered to keep big flows short and uncrossed. Columns: lender types side by side.

Colour nodes by

Days able to operate = days the medallion was on the TLC Authorized list. Not driving or hours. 2013 onward. Medallions were not randomly assigned to lenders (Figures 99, 107), so this describes, it does not prove a lender effect.

Medallions

No dollar amounts. Every number is a count of medallions (fractional where a loan is shared), not loan dollars. UCC filings record no loan principal.

  • Re-papered = a refinancing where the lead lender (or its merger successor) holds the medallion before and after, the debtor is unchanged, and only loan partners swap (stage 251 re_papered_participant_swap).
  • Drawn as a dotted refinanced (blue) arrow, labelled "re-papered", when it is most of the arrow; the inspector lists it as its own row.
  • Left out of the Other lenders internal loop and its lender-family count unless the box is ticked.

Moving dots travel in the direction of the move; more dots = more medallions. Only this year's moves carry dots, so faded older moves sit still.

Kinds
  • Sale (assigned): the loan is assigned to a new holder.
  • Refinanced: the borrower took a new loan from another lender within a year.
  • New loan: a medallion with no open lien (Public) gets a loan.
  • Exit: the lien is terminated or lapses; the medallion goes back to Public.
  • Merger or co-loan closed: the lender merged into another (Progressive into PenFed, Montauk into Bethpage), or one lender's share of a shared loan closed.
≥ 10

Hides arrows that move fewer than this many medallions, in both width modes, so the big moves stand out. Hidden flows still count in the inspector and in holdings.

Default 10: about 34 arrows a year carrying 90% of moved medallions (key network); 43 arrows, 69% (all lenders).

2000 to 2001: the filing record is thin (Figure 88); new-loan counts understate lending.
Network of medallion-loan holders. Nodes sit at fixed positions; arrows show medallions moving between holders in the selected year.

Drag for any speed; it snaps to 0.125x-4x marks (hold Alt/Option to stop snapping).

Events

Large type = major events: the sales of 250+ medallions (Capital One, Signature, Melrose and LOMTO to DePalma), the Melrose and LOMTO wind-up, Doral (the first lender failure), and the market turning points (Uber, price peak, COVID, MRP closings). Everything else is minor, in small type beneath. Each event is named on the strip and coloured by layer. Hover or click a lender on the map to highlight its events (the rest dim); click an event to jump to its year. "Book turns bad" (off by default) is each lender's first sign of trouble in its own filings (stage 232).

Arrow colour = main kind of move

    Node = holder role

Node size: circle area = medallions the holder has a lien on at year end; very small books drawn at a minimum size (8 px, or 5 px on all lenders) so they stay visible and clickable. Public is drawn at most 1.3x the largest lender; when capped, a faint dashed circle shows its true size.

Number under each lender = medallions held at year end (Medallions moved) or share of its book kept (Markov share).

Public = no open loan on record that year (not yet financed, released, or lapsed); not proof of no debt. Arrows out of it are new loans; arrows into it are exits.
